In this house we are aware of autism everyday. With 3 children on the autism spectrum, every decision we make is influenced by autism. Like all parents, we work to keep our children safe and sometimes autism adds some steps into this task.
The positive thing for us about the isolation of the last 2 years has been the reprieve from judgment. Now as we navigate the world again, we are faced with the knowledge that our children will again face the angry stares of adults and the judgmental taunts of children who simply don't understand the different way that they see, experience, and understand the world.
Today, like all days, I ask that we are all more understanding of the strangers we see. Be kind, everyone you meet is fighting their own battle.
Our battle isn't against autism.
Our battle is against those who think our children need to conform to make others comfortable.
